What is a Modern Apprenticeship?

A modern apprenticeship means that an agreement is signed between an employer and a young person, (they are for people between 16 and 21 years old) agreeing to a term of training,

A co-ordinator, usually from the ITO, is appointed to help ensure that all aspects of the trade are taught to the apprentice and that they are exposed to all aspects of the trade.

The co-ordinator also checks that theory assignments are completed and that the apprenticeship is generally working satisfactorily, and ensures that the apprentice attends the required number of block courses – normally one each year.

An apprenticeship, like all on the job training, is a real job and the employer is entitled to expect punctuality and good work habits as his reputation also rests on the reliability and ability of his staff, including the apprentice.

And remember, an apprenticeship or traineeship means that you ‘Learn While You Earn’, great if you don’t want to rely on a student loan which then must be paid back.
